The single most common power station return isn't a defect — it's the wrong size. Buyers guess based on price or brand reputation, get it home, and discover it can't survive a fridge's compressor kicking on, or it drains in two hours instead of the ten they expected. Sizing correctly takes two numbers, not one, and both matter.

The two numbers that actually matter

Every power station has a capacity rating in watt-hours (Wh) — how much total energy it stores, roughly comparable to a car's fuel tank size. It also has a continuous output rating in watts (W) — how much power it can deliver at once, comparable to the engine's horsepower. A 1,000Wh station with a 500W continuous output can run a laptop all day but will refuse to start a microwave, no matter how much charge is left in the tank.

A third number, surge or peak watts, covers the split-second spike that motors (fridge compressors, sump pumps, power tools) draw when they first switch on — often 2-3x their running wattage. A station rated for 500W continuous but only 800W surge will trip or shut down the instant a fridge compressor kicks in, even though the fridge only needs 150W to keep running.

How to size it in three steps

  1. List what you actually want to run. Be honest about the minimum, not the wishlist — a fridge, Wi-Fi router, some lights and phone charging covers most outage priorities without needing a huge (and expensive) unit.
  2. Add up running watts, then check the single biggest starting-watts spike. Your continuous output needs to clear the sum of running watts; your surge rating needs to clear your running total minus your biggest single item's running watts, plus that item's starting watts.
  3. Decide how many hours you need, then multiply. Watt-hours needed ≈ your running-watts total × hours × 1.15 (to cover inverter losses). That figure is your minimum Wh capacity.
